Pedestrians

Insight into behaviour of pedestrians as well as tools to assess pedestrian flow conditions are important in for instance planning and geometric design of walking facilities under regular and safety-critical circumstances.

Two major research projects on pedestrian behaviour have recently been finished. The project 'Walking behaviour in public spaces' has been sponsored by the Social Science Research Council (MaGW) of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). This research, performed by Serge Hoogendoorn, has been aimed at establishing a high-end microscopic simulation model for pedestrians walking in continuous space.

Secondly, a PhD-project on modelling passenger flows in public transport facilities resulted in the simulation tool SimPed. This research has been performed in co-operation with the Dutch engineering office Holland Railconsult.

In the near future, a number of new research projects will be started.
